How can we make learning fun while keeping the UI simple and user-friendly?
Acuitii is a start-up aiming at health education for both health professionals and non-health professionals. The mobile application utilizes quizzes, crosswords and competitions to engage people that are curious about learning specialized content.
I was tasked to capture the target population’s feedback and redesign the mobile experience.

THE PROBLEM
Acuitii users found the current UI experience confusing, which in turn led to low user engagement with the app. The interface presented a challenge to new users since it was not intuitive.

THE SOLUTION
Redesigned the screens into simple, guided walkthroughs that highlight how Acuitii works and what it offers. Revamped the homepage and search page to enhance navigation and accessibility.

I interviewed 15 participants to find out how to make the mobile experience better.
I interviewed 15 people (5 medical students, 5 health professionals, and 5 non-health professionals). I gathered all the insights and created an affinity map, clustering the feedback into themes.
Objectives for 1:1 interviews
Below are some of the insights received.

Objectives for 1:1 interviews
- Find out what learning applications people use to study
- Discover what features of the app do people use frequently
- Find out what the pain points and challenges are when using Acuitii
- Find out if the information in the app is helpful and clear
Below are some of the insights received.
Users found the design confusing, with unclear terminology, limited customization, an overwhelming search page, and unnecessary features.
It was evident from the interviews that users felt that the current design was counterintuitive. The terminology is not comprehensive and gives no insight into what it means. Users stated the lack of customization when creating flashcards and questions. Users found the search page to be overwhelming. Many users also did not see the need for some features, the main one being the leaderboard. Acuitii has a section where users can compete with others but most of the users that were interviewed voiced that they are not interested in gamifying learning. They want to be able to study information similar to the competitor platform Anki without distractions like games and leaderboards.
Persona
From the interview data, I developed user personas on the users most likely to engage with Acuitii.

User Journey Map
With the valuable insights gained from user interviews, I was able to create a comprehensive user journey map that truly captures the user's experience with our app. This map enables us to not only identify and understand the user's joys, but also their pain points, allowing us to make targeted improvements that enhance their overall experience
The redesign enhances user experience with intuitive navigation, 'Study Mode,' and customizable sets.
To address the concern received about a lackluster onboarding process, I redesigned it to help the user along their journey. The onboarding screens redesign purpose was to be simple walkthroughs that introduce users on how Acuitii can be used and what it can accomplish.
I have redesigned the homepage and search page of the mobile app to provide users with a more intuitive and streamlined experience. By incorporating user-friendly features such as tooltips and tags, I aimed to enhance user navigation and make the app more accessible to all.
The new redesign explores ‘Study Mode’ which employs the leitner method to improve learning. Users can also edit and private their sets. The feedback we received from users was extremely positive. Beyond a boost in positive sentiment, we’ve also seen an increase in engagement from users since the redesign.
