Problem
How might socially connected people leave records of their travel history so that others can look at it and get ideas for their next trip? Travel can be a complex and overwhelming experience, especially when it comes to planning and organizing. There is nothing on the current market that centralizes the event planning on a shareable platform.

Goals
The goal of this product is to simplify the travel planning process and help travelers create an organized and comprehensive travel plan. This plan will not only include the usual aspects of travel, such as accommodations, and activities, but also a way to capture memories and share them with others. By providing a centralized platform for travel planning, our product aims to make travel easier, more enjoyable, and more memorable for all travelers.

Design Process
We decided it was best to ideate as many different concepts that we could to solve our “how might we” problem statement. We came up with ideas outside of the mobile app realm so we wouldn’t limit ourselves. We narrowed in on three concepts that we wanted to create storyboards for. Our group also decided it was best to start a competitive analysis right away so we can look at similar ideas.

To understand our target population’s needs, we designed a survey with 13 questions digging into participants’ travel preferences. The survey gathered information such as age, gender, frequency of trips per year, and the planning stages of travel. We received 34 responses. They key findings were:
  • 70% of respondents plan part of the trip ahead of time but leave open spaces for spontaneity once they’ve arrived.
  • 61.8% of respondents use websites to help plan their trip
  • Respondents shared that they like to plan ahead of time to avoid missed opportunities and it allows them to relax more during the trip
  • A majority of respondents said they most enjoy learning about interesting places to visit

Each member of the group interviewed two participants (a total of 10) about their travel habits and experiences. The interviews allowed our team to ask more in-depth questions of target-users to better understand the motivations when it comes to travel planning. Personas were then created from the interviews and surveys.

Most poignant in our findings was the need for asynchronous collaborations for itinerary-building. Target users want one main location to add potential events, lodging options, estimated costs, map-tracking, and collate it into a day-by-day planner. We gathered that target users are frustrated and overwhelmed by the various travel website and app options that only offer help in one area but don’t have the functionality to add all the details together.

Based on interview feedback and affinity wall analysis, we have decided to design a desktop and mobile application for producing and sharing itineraries with interactive visual elements. Our design will include complete itineraries - a fully planned-out trip that gives users something to look at and evaluate. They may not follow the trip to the exact detail, but they may take parts they like and incorporate those into their own trip. Our vision is that these shareable itineraries will come from other users of the application.

The low-fidelity mockups above sketch out how we would like the home page of our desktop to look. The home page would have a search bar where users can input their desired location to vacation to. The search results would then populate itineraries based on their search result.  If the user were not to input anything, there would already be itineraries populated on the homepage that users can filter out based on what is trending, out-of-the-way locations, most liked itineraries, etc.

Solution - Desktop

Featured itineraries and customizable filters to suit your needs
As a user, you will have the opportunity to discover itineraries featured on the home page. Once you have been inspired, you can then utilize our search feature and an array of activity filters to refine your search results and find the perfect travel experience that matches your interests and preferences.

Adding itineraries to collections and more filter options
Our platform offers an effortless way for users to save and organize their preferred itineraries. With just a click, users can add an itinerary to a pre-existing collection or create a new one. Additionally, our filter button provides an easy-to-use tool for users to refine their search by specifying the duration of the trip, budget, and number of travelers.

Easy itinerary creation with personalized recommendations
The user can create a new itinerary for their travel location, enter trip specifics like the number of members and trip length, and then begin adding activities. After clicking on an empty time slot, a menu will appear where the user can search for nearby activities, drag and drop saved activities, and receive personalized recommendations.

Solution - Mobile

Make changes to your itinerary on the go
If any conflicts or scheduling issues arise, the application provides a user-friendly alert that prompts users to either decrease the duration of future activities or remove an event entirely. Once the necessary adjustments have been made, the itinerary is automatically updated to reflect the changes, and the user can continue with their trip according to the revised itinerary. This ensures that users can enjoy their travels without any disruptions or complications.
